Whose Your Role Model?

Image
R ole models are significant to have in life. They inspire others to become better than what others perceive them to be. They can also impact significant decisions made to achieve one’s aspirations. One can also learn from their role model. As once stated by Tionne Watkins, “A role model can teach you to love and respect yourself.” Additionally, regardless of the situation, they can provide essential advice during difficult circumstances. In the novel, “The Other Wes Moore,” the author demonstrates the importance of having a role model throughout chapters seven to eight. Similar to the characters within the novel, my personal life displays the importance of having someone to learn and imitate from. To begin with, most individuals often place their parents as someone they admire and imitate. Certainly, parents, particularly my parents, are perfect examples of what good role models are. However, personally, those outside our household can also significantly impact our lives to a gr...

What Is Your Commitment?

Image
I n life, commitments are made almost every single day, either to our parents, our teachers, or our own friends. However, commitments aren’t just promises, but it is to have enthusiasm to complete a task or a purpose. Through commitment, one can have the opportunity to push forward onto a desired goal. As Jill Koenig once said, “Commitment is the glue that bonds you to your goals.” Regardless of an individual’s mission in life, there are three important requisites in staying committed to one’s goals: sacrifice, purpose, and determination. In the novel, “The Other Wes Moore,” the author focuses on various themes within chapters four to six. However, there is one specific theme that is prevalent within all three chapters, commitment. Similarly, this theme of commitment can also be seen in my personal life. Throughout high school, there were several obstacles that were blocking my path in achieving my goal of becoming a chemical engineer. Financially, my parents were struggling in ...

Personal Choices Lead to Consequences

Image
Life is full of decision making! Life is also a reflection of choices, actions, thoughts and habits that are made. Indeed, we as humans are constantly making choices that will forever shape our lives, aspirations, values, and lifestyle. However, the choices that are made can either positively or negatively impact one’s future. As Anon once said, “You are free to make whatever choice you want, but you are not free from the consequences of the choice.” In the novel, “The Other Wes Moore,” the author, Wes Moore, describes his and the other Wes Moore’s life story, and the effects of the choices made by their parents. Through their parent’s actions, thoughts, notions and habits, both men’s character, values, thoughts and lifestyle were significantly impacted. Similarly, the decisions made by my own parents, particularly my father, has also played a significant role in my life, molding me into the person that I am today. In the Dominican Republic, it is common to get marrie...

A merica is in the midst of a big fat issue—a large obesity epidemic. A great majority of individuals have shifted from eating healthy meals to foods that are high in saturated fats, sugars, and carbohydrates. In the United States, more than one-third of the population is suffering from obesity. Who is to blame for such a large epidemic? Typically, most individuals have a strong tendency to blame fast food industries for providing lack of information regarding how much, exactly, is being consumed.  However, fast food industries have no say in what foods should or shouldn’t be consumed. This obesity epidemic is the cause of people’s own conscious choices—choosing to eat large portions of foods high in saturated fats, sugar, and carbohydrates. Likewise, people are not performing the recommended physical activity to burn calories.        To begin with, people are no longer motivated to commit to losing weight. Often, many are b...

My Literacy Development Journey

Image
Perfecting literacy skills at an early age greatly benefits a child in the future.   However, it is solely through the child’s parent that they can develop the necessary components for literacy.  As Joseph Addison once said,  “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”  Additionally, it is important that a child’s parent has a solid foundation with literacy in order to teach their child. In the United States, a great majority of Americans have the opportunity to learn the components necessary to perfect their literacy skills. However, there are few individuals that don’t—I am one of those few. Unfortunately, my cultural background played a vital role in my early literacy development. When I was a toddler, my parents were recent aliens of this nation, and were unfamiliar with the English language. It became difficult for them to teach me English, so they decided to teach me Spanish. Indeed, there were times where my father would try to teach me some word...
